Philip Sherburne A bit like Mosca, I love slowly taking a DJ set from 100 BPM to 120 -- in fact, I love it so much that this almost feels like a cheat code I'm reluctant to use. But it's so brilliantly put together (and so great on purely musical terms, entirely aside from the rising-tempo conceit) that one of these days I'm going to have to plan a set around it. Genius.

about

RENT037 - groovy but seriously tripped out disco >>>

Taking the disco megamix to its illogical conclusion - proper hands on approach to production, constantly swapping out the beat for a new one while raising the tempo from 100bpm to 120bpm... I often spend a good half an hour of a DJ set working my way up from slower stuff to something more like 'dance' tempos, but sometimes I wish I could get there sooner. I didn't want this to just be a simple speed-up DJ tool though, so this is actually one of the most complex tunes I've ever made - the K-hole breakdown took a lot of work to get right and the mixdown was crazy - each 16 bar loop is made from scratch so it was a bit like mixing 16 different tunes instead of one.

If u know my music u know I don't really touch out-and-out disco - I usually find it too happy, too cheesy, too safe. But I love certain elements - the claps especially and all the organic percussion. And I'm a recent convert to the Linn kick drum! Cuts through the mix so nicely. So I took all the bits I love, came up with a John Swing / Maghreban / maybe even Commodo style bassline, and went mad with the tweaky FX, lots of little ghosts in the machine. A good headphone experience as well as a club thing. For the DJ / producer geeks - first 32 bars are at 100bpm, until the first mini breakdown at 38 seconds - then it steadily speeds up until after the mad breakdown at 4:34 where it stays at 120bpm on the dot so u can mix out of it.

So something a bit different again - hope u enjoy it >>>
