RENT028 - wow beats meets favela funk >>>

I fell in love with funk carioca back in about 2005. I was a vinyl DJ back then and finding any funk records was almost impossible. Since then I've been to Brazil and went to a couple of parties in Rio - one was under a bridge and the ceiling was so low u either had to limbo backwards or bend forwards. I've stayed listening to the sound and heard it change over the years and become more minimal, distorted and weird. I wanted to take it to the logical conclusion, which in my head sounds something like Lashes. I think it's one of my favourite tracks I've ever made.

I didn't use any of the tropes from baile funk like the beatbox or the voltmix or the tamborzão stuff - I didn't actually use any normal drums at all. Listen and you'll hear car doors, bed springs, a dialtone, lots of balloon rubs, wrenches, champagne corks, a waterboatman, an Australian whipbird, dog tags, a car locking, a shot glass, an electric screwdriver, and loads of sound design type bits.

Making this was an absolute laptop melter. 179 channels in the end, all hand programmed to get that Rio beatbox groove, all separately EQd and treated - my machine was crawling by the end :( But hopefully it should melt some minds and dancefloors as well as laptops. I tried a lot of experiments with this one but not all of them made the final cut - finding the balance between all out FSU mentality and a functional club track is always hard, but I'm really pleased with how it turned out. Another one to file under 'dark but fun'.
