RENT030 - believe me, this one's been on a journey!

I originally started out with a really specific idea in mind, something that I've been playing with for a few years - basically making something as electronic and experimental as Autechre, but with the weight and functionality of decent club tracks. Something that would slap, but differently. So I had a really nice chain set up and got a tonne of material recorded, all tweaky angular stuff. It was a bit spiky and missing the club element at first, I was channelling Grischa Lichtenberger, SDEM and lots of Sean & Rob... then I found the beginning of a groove and arranged everything more skippy and fleshed it out. But it was becoming kinda like 2-step and I wasn't feeling it after a while.

A bit later I ran some more sounds through the same chain and suddenly I had a T++ type affair on my hands, it sounded like SHXCXCHCXSH and ENA and Dynamo / Traktor etc too. Swung technoid heads down club stuff, filter madness, zoning out vibes. But after some A/B-ing I just felt it was lacking energy and bit by bit, like the ship of Theseus, it evolved into this blistering modern rave thing - now I was channelling Shed, Nazar, Stenny, Dan Habarnam, Slikback, pure energy with only a few of the tweaky bits and sound design from the original session still intact. (Lots of name-dropping in this write up, sorry...)

One day I'll go back and have another stab at soundsystem Autechre but for now I'm very happy to present u with Polygraph - all that adrenaline from jungle and hardcore mixed with the sexy feel of broken beat, UKG or artists like Karizma, and a whole heap of OUT-THERE-NESS as ever, the breakdown isn't exactly The Optics but it's a mindmelter still. Yet another one to file under 'dark but fun' - I'm getting predictable :)
