RENT033 - head gone >>>

So listen, I have a playlist called 'choppas' - all kinds of tempos and genres but the thread running through all the trax is strong (we're talking spiders' silk strong) - all these sounds are ready to crossfade to the moon and back - no droney pads or long vocals, just beats and textures that u can chop up as a DJ. It's one of my favourite playlists to freestyle from when I'm playing live, and always a MOMENT when I do, so naturally as a producer I want to add to this list.

This track actually started off with some AI experiments - anyone interested, 2023 is still not the year for it - it sounded super boxy and claustrophobic... But I have a super coherent wow beats sound palette now and the stabs of in-your-face noise / foley at the start of every bar just started to shine through and I gradually took everything to that hi-def sound instead of the muddy AI stuff.

Chopping stuff can become a bit rigid and stuck to the grid though, and at 140bpm the halftime spectre is always looming, so I kinda imagined the track as a 4x4 thing rather than a plodder - techno momentum over dubstep lurch - so there's plenty of time signature fuckry to keep the thing moving kinda agile and unpredictable, but never at the expense of the dancers. I like to go clever with the sound design but simple with the structure - I want everyone locked in and confident, dancing like it's natural and not an exam.

So although this one definitely goes in the choppas playlist, it's kind of designed to do the chopping and tapestops for u, especially the second half - everything's coming from a DJ point of view. Short and sweet - no boring intros - madness from start to finish. Honestly if u don't enjoy DJing this kind of stuff in the club you're doing it all wrong ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
